Understanding GST and Your eBay Business

If you’re going to sell large amounts of eBay then you will need to understand where you stand with GST and when to charge it. Every single person’s tax situation will be different though, so don’t rely on this general information. If you are making more than a few dollars a week then make sure you talk to your accountant or call the tax office.

So what are the rules when it comes to running an eBay business and GST?

If you are not carrying on as an “enterprise”, (enterprise is commercial activities that does not include hobbies) as defined in the legislation, you do not need to register for GST. If you are running as an enterprise and your annual turnover exceeds $75,000 then you will need to register for GST.

So your sales for your hobby items are not subject to GST, however if you are working as an enterprise then you are responsible for paying GST to the tax office. Remember you cannot add GST to the sale after it has gone through it must be included in the price of the item. However you should note that if you are selling items to overseas buyers, these are considered GST free, so if you have sold the item to the buyer you may consider refunding the GST component or reducing your postage..
