ATO Targeting Small Time eBayers
The Australian Tax Office is conducting a sting on unscrupulous eBay users who attempt to avoid paying tax on income earned through the site.
Two years ago the auction site informed its users that the ATO had requested detailed personal information of Australian members who sold more than $50,000 worth of goods on the site however this time it has gone after smaller part time sellers who think they don’t have to pay tax because they only sell second-hand goods, the benchmark has been set at $20,000.
The positive out of this for us serious full time eBay sellers is that it will clean out the market of those that are making money but don’t want to pay any tax on their earnings. So in the next few months you might see some sellers disappear out of your market because of the tax department cracking down.
Personal information requested by the ATO includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, user IDs, dates of birth, dates of registration on eBay and monthly sales data.
So make sure that you have updated records for the time you have been conducting business on eBay and all your figures in Selling Manager Pro are correct, just in case….
Til next time
